ABOUT THE FUTURE ByTheSeaFuture newspaper was started in 2006 by a "think tank" of concerned citizens and long time town volunteers with the hope of increasing awareness and encouraging participation in the future of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, Florida. Now a popular and well-read publication, the paper enjoys a large and growing readership throughout north-eastern Broward County.
During our first few years of publishing, it has become increasingly clear that our fellow residents want and appreciate our newspaper which presents the facts about town issues, minus the personal attacks, sarcasm, and lies directed toward public and private citizens. Yes, we do have opinions in our newspaper as part of the editorials, but you'll also find a great deal about businesses in town, residents who are special, news about all community activities and clubs, and the opinions of your fellow residents voiced in letters to the editor.
Members of our Editorial Board have contributed positively to LBTS by serving on town boards, running organizations, and giving their time to community service. Some have training in journalism and have worked for national and international publications. ByTheSeaFuture is also a member of the National Newspaper Association having won three awards for excellence in 2007 and another in 2010. Also in 2010, Mark Brown won a Golden Dozen Award for having written one of the 12 best editorials in the country in 2009.
As a matter of record, ByTheSeaFuture is the only newspaper published in
the town of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, Florida with the following distinct and prestigious qualifications.
- Member of the National Newspaper Association
- Winner of 5 National Awards for Journalistic Excellence

Future Wins Two New National Awards

Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors (right),
presents ByTheSeaFuture Editor Mark Brown
(left) with the Golden Dozen award for having
written one of the 12 best editorials in the
country last year among non-daily newspapers.
Brown’s editorial, which appeared on January 9, 2009, called on the town commission
to put the contracts for both town manager and town attorney out to bid, and
to conduct performance reviews of the town manager and staff. According to the
ISWNE, the editorial was honored on the basis of “original reporting, clear statement
of the problem, arguments supported by facts and a conclusion that offers a
clear call to action.” |
Brown was also awarded third place for investigative reporting by the National
Newspaper Association, for a story he wrote which chronicled the events surrounding
a tragic suicide which took place in LBTS in 2009. The article disclosed how
former Vice Mayor Jerry McIntee disregarded departmental rules and put himself
and others at risk when he entered the home where the shooting took place. It also
documented how McIntee mistakenly declared the shooting victim dead and tried to
cancel the ambulance call, even though he was still alive. |
